The La Plata Council on Aging, Inc. (COA) is a local 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization and is your connection to services, resources, and opportunities for seniors. Our purpose, as defined in our bylaws, is to support, educate and advocate for seniors.
The La Plata COA has a long, rich history of serving seniors in this area. We have been an integral part of establishing and working with the Senior Centers in La Plata County since 1974. Sheila Casey, director of the Durango-La Plata Senior Center, located in Durango, has stated, “COA has impacted every program we have at the Senior Center!”
At one time we had representatives on advisory committees to the Durango City Council and the La Plata County Commissioners regarding senior issues.
Our main focuses are to provide financial support to the Senior Centers for special purchases and needs that are not covered in the budgets and to support low income seniors with scholarships for activities at the Senior Centers.
Meetings are held on the second Monday of February, April, June, August and October with an annual meeting held on the second Monday of December. Meetings are rotated among the three Senior Centers in La Plata County, i.e. the Pine River Senior Center in Bayfield, the Durango-La Plata Senior Center in Durango and the Southern Ute Senior Center in Ignacio
Primary sources of income have been membership dues and funds generated by sales in the Thrift Shop at the Durango-La Plata Senior Center. We are now expanding our funding base through new donations, new money-making enterprises, and grant funding for special projects.
Membership is open to all seniors and residents county-wide. Annual dues are two dollars. We encourage you to join and to attend the meetings. Lend your voice to decisions about how our money is spent and about new ways to serve the seniors of La Plata County.
